12:27 pm - 2006 Quiz
|
1.) Where did you ring in 2006? In my old apartment in Beltsville, I think
2.) What was your status by Valentine's Day? I had been engaged for a few days short of a year.
3.) Were you in school (any time this year)? No. I was an intern, but that doesn't count.
4.) How did you earn your keep? I interned until August at Studio as their ASM. In August I started temping during the day and worked at some really great places. I floor managed Red Light Winter with Nick and stage managed tempOdyssey, both at Studio.
5.) Did you have to go to the hospital? No. Thankfully.
6.) Did you encounter the police? Not that I am aware of.
7.) Where did you go on vacation? I went to Ocean City, MD for a week in June and went on my honeymoon in November on a cruise that left from Tampa and went to Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Mexico and Belize City, Belize.
8.) What did you purchase that was over $500? Actually, nothing. My wedding dress was under $500, and I didn't buy it.
9.) Did you know anybody who got married? I got married this year! And I had a few other friends/people that I know who got married, as well.
10.) You know anybody who passed away? I don't think so.
11.) Have you run into anybody you graduated high school with? Yes. You always do whenever you go back to Easton.
12.) Did you move anywhere? I moved to DC to Columbia Heights in August.
13.) What sporting events did you go to? None that I recall.
14.) What concerts did you go to? My dad's concert at the Avalon in Easton.
15.) Are you registered to vote? Yes.
16.) If so, did you do your patriotic duty on Nov. 7? No. Long story.
17.) Where do you live now? In a tiny basement apartment in Columbia Heights.
18.) Describe your birthday. I had two shows for Caroline or Change at Studio and the cast bought me beautiful flowers. Very sweet of them. I think I celebrated with Andres the day after, but I don't really remember.
19.) What's the one thing you thought you would never do but did in 2006? Find an affordable apartment in DC a year out of college.
20.) What is one thing you regretted this year? I don't really regret anything.
21.) What's something you learned about yourself? That I'm braver and stronger than I give myself credit for.
22.) Any new additions to your family? Yes. I had a few cousins who had babies.
23.) What was your best month? September. The wedding was the best day of my life.
24.) What from pop culture will you remember 2006 by? Probably the Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes wedding. Because people never stopped talking about it. And of course Sadam Hussein's death, but I don't consider that "pop" culture.
25.) How would you rate this year with a scale from 1 (shitty) to 10 (excellent)? It was a 10. Ups and downs, very highs and some very lows, but it was a great year. I learned a lot about myself this year.

2:53 pm - There is only underwater
|
I am updating. Unbelievable.
My birthday was two days ago. I had two shows that day. It was pretty uneventful. It is my belief that birthdays are really only as exciting as you set them up to be. I didn't tell many people. And most people forgot. I could have chosen to throw myself a party and make a big fuss. But I didn't. It means more when people remember that it's your birthday, rather than telling everyone in the world so that they're forced to make you feel special and important. Nevertheless, Andres bought me a lovely hardcover copy of Water for Elephants, which is good so far, as well as a copy of Brokeback Mountain on DVD. I have an Old Navy gift card on the way, so that's exciting. I got beautiful lillies from Malinda and a lovely bouquet from the cast of Caroline or Change.
Speaking of Caroline, thanks to those who have come so far. It's a great show, and everyone should come and see it. Great cast, great costumes, great lighting, great staging great choreography. It'll run for a long time, but I don't think I'll be able to send out free ticket notices. Sorry!
The rehearsal process was one of the hardest, least gratifying experiences I've had thus far, but the cast is great. And I was challenged, to say the least. I was averaging 70+ hours a week, which was the hardest part of all. And the set is not good, in my opinion. There is no masking on either side of the stage, so the entire backstage area is viewable. Not pretty. It's making me very unhappy, and makes me stressed. It's hard to try to stay as far out of audience vision as possible while achieving all of my backstage tasks. There is too much furniture for the space, so storage is lacking. It's ridiculous. I could vent about this forever, so I'll just spare any readers and move on.
Wedding planning is in a crucial stage. Buying wedding bands, finalizing honeymoon plans, dress fittings, working on specifics of the ceremony, etc.
Studio wraps up for me in August. Wedding in September. After that, no specific plans. I'm sending out my resume this week to area theatres to see if I'll get jobs or interviews and what not. Cross your fingers.

I'm not turning Equity yet, and I'm so relieved. A weight has been lifted off my shoulders. The decision put me through unbelievable stress, but everything is worked out for now, and I get to keep my job as it was. So I'm happy.
Oh, and Kristen...I read Franny and Zooey and liked it. It made me think of you every time I picked it up. Hope you're well.

8:38 pm - To join, or not to join, that is the question...
|
I got a really rather unbelievable offer to join Equity, which would be effective in January if I accepted. It would mean a lot more money, health insurance, and Studio would pay my $1,000 entrance fee. Which is all really incredible and shocking.
However...
I am totally torn, because it's so early in my career, and because I'm really afraid I won't find enough Equity work at this stage in my career. This is really the hardest decision I've ever had to make, and I've been stressing because of this for the last 4 days.
People are telling me to go with my gut. To do what seems right. But neither option seems right. They both seem horribly wrong. So what can I do?

10:48 am - Come see my show
|
Please come see my show, everyone. I am currently ASMing A Number, by Caryl Churchill at Studio Theatre. It's only an hour long, and there are really good restaurants right around the theatre that you can go to afterwards. And I'll be there. Three good reasons. Anyway, please come see it. It's my first "professional" show.
I got incredibly excited when I opened the program and my name had a little plus sign next to it, letting the world know that I'm an Equity candidate. Yay!
Work is rough, but good. I work about 60 hours a week. Today was my first day off in nearly 3 weeks. I'm overworked and underpaid, but that's theatre. I'm happy to be making a small living doing it. And I like the people. So overall, it's going well.
Andres is amazing. I wouldn't be surviving this without him, I can tell you that much.
Today is grocery shopping day. First time in three weeks. Desperation has kicked in.
I don't have much time to read, but I finally finished Little Women (never read it as a child) several weeks ago, and have since been working on A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Which I love, but I don't have time to read, so I get an average of 5 pages read a day. It makes for a slow process. I got spoiled this summer when I read about 10 books in a few months. I miss that.
My mother's birthday is today. I had hoped I could finish the scarf that I've been knitting for her, but I think it will just have to be late.
James, Chris, Andrew, Rachel, Melody, Betsy, and Tyler all came to see my show, which was awesome. We all went to lunch at Cosi, which I had never been too...excellent. It was good to see everyone. Most of them I hadn't seen since May when I graduated.
Best wishes to everyone at UMD who has auditions in the upcoming weeks.
Off to grocery shop, then to spend my afternoon filling up on trash by watching Sex and the City. And then an evening with the lovely Andres to work on his English paper with him. I hope everyone is doing well.

8:31 pm - For those concerned...
|
For those who were wondering, wisdom teeth surgery went okay. I had them taken out over a week ago, and have almost healed completely. Overall, it wasn't horrible, but overall, it wasn't great. Not something I'd like to have to do again, so I'm thankful that I won't have to. I LOVED my dentist, oddly enough. Who loves the person that pulls four teeth and causes you pain? Apparently I do. Anyway, the anesthesia and Percocet didn't cause me any vomiting or nausea, so I was fortunate. Nevertheless, it made me incredibly tired and disoriented, and I slept constantly. I still have the remains of a fairly large bruise on my right jaw from where they clamped my mouth open. It's green and yellow and going away, but I kind of liked it, weirdly enough. My mother was great and took good care of me, thankfully. However, I never want to see vanilla pudding or strawberry jello again for a REALLY long time. Many thanks to Andres for the support, patience, and devotion. I was in Easton for 5 days, in bed all day, and he called me religiously, sent me get well emails, and bought me a card and a little gift. He's the best.
Summer Opera has come and gone, and I start work at Studio in several days. Very nervous. Very excited. They have a really cool week planned for us next week, including lunch with the founder/artistic director/director of the first show of the season. The interns will also be going to see Take Me Out on Friday, then Jenny Chow on Sunday, and attending the cast party in which we will have champagne (or water, in my case) with the cast and crew of both shows. HOT. I'm so excited about that. This week, the SM and I start rehearsal prep and what not, then the following week we begin rehearsal for A Number, by Caryl Churchill. I'm psyched. It's still very surreal to me that I'm going to be working at Studio for a year. Crazy. I'm very thankful.
What is also surreal is that Ryan moves out in a little more than two weeks, and Chris Wilson moves in. Crazy. So much of the apartment is visually staying in tact, so it's basically like we're just switching a person for a different one. Most of the furniture and decorations are staying, so nothing else is changing. Just losing a roommate and gaining another. Best wishes to Ryan on his move to Virginia. It's been quite a year.
It's been a while since I've updated, so here's a few lists of recent things.
Movies I've seen in Theatres: Batman Begins (awesome) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (not quite so awesome) Wedding Crashers (I thought it was hilarious, personally...I enjoyed the stupidity of it, and allowed myself to laugh, taking it for what it was)
Movies I've seen on DVD: Maria Full of Grace (loved it...highly recommend it) I Heart Huckabees (didn't like it, but the acting was GREAT...particularly Mark Whalberg) Alfie (blah...very predictable and not that interesting...pretty cast, but not much else going for it) Motorcycle Diaries (loved it...watch it...very intriguing...BIG fan of Gael Garcia Bernal, as well as the guy who played his traveling buddy) Saved! (LOVED it, which I wasn't really expecting)
Books/Plays I've read: White Noise, by Don DeLillo (good book...not really my thing, but definitely good) Robber Bride, by Margaret Atwood (brilliant, as always...one of my favorite books now) Skinny Dip, by Carl Hiaasen (awesome...a great summer read that won't make you feel guilty about liking it...not a trashy romance, not about socialites, not about rich people on the Hamptons, not about shopaholics...very witty and fun) A Number, by Caryl Churchill (very interesting...can't wait to be in rehearsal for this show...I'm going to get to witness the rehearsal process of professional actors and get paid...yes!)

12:05 am - Are you sufficiently sophonsified?
|
Malinda is the luckiest girl I know. She dropped the ring her parents bought her down the drain, and somehow, some way, the maintenance guy was able to fish it out safe and sound. Lucky. It makes me paranoid that I will drop my ring down the drain, as well. Note to self: Do not place jewelry on the sink when washing face. It could end in tragedy.
I'm almost finished Cat's Eye, which is a fabulous book. Highly recommended. I've read quite a bit in the last two days, which is incredibly exciting.
I have several days off this week, one of which was today, and it has inspired me to be productive in odd ways.
I finally bought a wedding planning book the other night. I found one I actually liked. Not pretentious. Very straight forward. Explains a lot about planning on a budget, no matter how small or how large. It gives percentages as to how much of a percentage of cost flowers should be, food, etc. Very helpful.
I also bought two binders. One with dividers so that I can organize the images I am pulling for the wedding research I have done. I know, I know, I'm over organized. It just helps me gather my thoughts. The other binder is for organizing fashion/costume design images that I have pulled, in hopes that it will inspire me to get back into drawing. Time is always the issue. But I'm hoping that compiling the images will make time less of an excuse, since I will have the pictures organized. We'll see.
Went out to dinner last night with Andres and one of his best friends from the military. It was a good time. I always enjoy hanging out with him.
Had a lovely date to Friendly's with Ryan this evening.
Took a lovely nap today.
Have been having pretty rough nightmares lately. Lame.
I think a guy at the grocery store might have a crush on me. He's very nice, and very awkward, but not creepy. And it's not to the point where I feel I need to mention that I have a fiance. It's completely harmless. And I'm completely not interested. But it's entertaining. He asks me awkward questions such as, "So...you're shopping here again?" And, "So, I guess you live near here, or something?" And, "Ummm...did you have to wait in line long?" Nice kid.
Work is going well. The first show opened and closed, and we're almost to tech of the second one. I think I've decided that I'll miss this place a lot when the season is over.
Off to bed. See you in 2 months when I get around to posting again.

8:19 pm - Book Quiz
|
Book Quiz
1) Total number of books owned: Probably about 150-200. Lots of which I haven't read and desperately want to. Yet, it doesn't stop me from buying more.
2) The last book I bought: Hmmm...the last book that I intended to buy was A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith, as well as Skinny Dip by Carl Hiaasen, however, my lovely fiance ended up purchasing them once we got to the register.
3) The last book I read: Still Life With Woodpecker, by Tom Robbins. Awesome book. Very peculiar, but quite enjoyable.
4) Books that mean a lot to me: Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood The Dive From Clausen's Pier, by Ann Packer Magician's Assistant, by Ann Patchett White Oleander, by Janet Fitch Bridge to Terebithia, by Katherine Patterson
5) Favorite books given/lent to me by friends: Excluding the ones lent to me from #4: Alias Grace, by Margaret Atwood (lent to me by Maribeth) Lucia, Lucia, by Adriana Trigiani (lent to me by the book store I used to work in...one of those advanced reader things) Shape of Things, by Neil Labute (lent to me by Ryan...it's a play, but it still counts)
6) What am I going to read next? I'm currently reading White Noise, by Don DeLillo. Not to be confused with that movie that was supposedly really bad. Different story. After that, I plan to read Cat's Eye, by Margaret Atwood.

10:35 pm - A passage I liked...
|
In reading Still Life With Woodpecker, by Tom Robbins, I stumbled across this passage that I really liked:
"The most important thing is love," said Leigh-Cheri. "I know that now. There's no point in saving the world if it means losing the moon."
Leigh-Cheri sent that message through his attorney. The message continued, "I'm not quite twenty, but, thanks to you, I've learned something that many women these days never learn: Prince Charming really is a toad. And the Beautiful Princess has halitosis. The bottom line is that (a) people are never perfect, but love can be, (b) that is the one and only way that the mediocre and the vile can be transformed, and (c) doing that makes it that. Loving makes love. Loving makes itself. We waste time looking for the perfect lover instead of creating the perfect love. Wouldn't that be the way to make love stay?"
The next day, Bernard's attorney delivered to her this reply: Love is the ultimate outlaw. It just won't adhere to any rules. The most any of us can do is to sign on as its accomplice. Instead of vowing to honor and obey, maybe we should swear to aid and abet. That would mean that security is out of the question. The words "make" and "stay" beocme in appropriate. My love for you has no strings attached. I love you for free.
Leigh-Cheri went out in the blackberries and wept. "I'll follow him to the ends of the earth," she sobbed.
Yes, darling. But the earth doesn't have any ends. Columbus fixed that.

9:03 pm - Weird
|
I graduate tomorrow. Weird.
So technically, Maribeth and I are now professional freelance stage managers. Also weird.
Getting paid to stage manage (or in my case, assist) is MUCH more fun than doing it for free. It makes me feel slightly more appreciated.
The cast of Cendrillon is great. I'm excited to work on this show. The director is awesome, the accompanist is possibly the sweetest person ever, it's great working with Ryan and Maribeth. I love the music. The concept is interesting and fun. However, I have never disliked someone so quickly and so much as I dislike the maestro. Awful. No more needs to be said, except that it's only the third day of rehearsal. Thankfully he isn't going to be the maestro for the second show. What a relief.
I've been knitting a scarf. And I like it. And I'm really excited to have some free time. Key word "some." I'm quite busy with work. Very long days of rehearsal, plus the daily commute in and out of D.C. Which, by the way, I am very proud of. I have started overcoming my fear of driving in the city. And I've done pretty well so far. But free time is nice. Coming home and relaxing, having the opportunity to read for fun and not for school, not having homework. It's exciting.
I will be sending out employment applications this week. I am in desperate need of work. Preferably in theatre. But I'm seeking out other options, as well. I'm scared. But I have faith that something will work out somehow. Because really, it always does. And something HAS to work out, because there is no other option. I keep telling myself that I am more than qualified for work in the city. But telling myself that doesn't help. Making other people see that I'm qualified is the trick.
There is a REALLY loud, bizarre version of "Nowadays" from Chicago on the Showtunes channel right now, and it's kind of freaking me out.
I'm off to be a nerd and knit in the living room while listening to showtunes. Ahhh, I'm getting old at 21. Well...not 21 for long. But still old.

10:08 pm - It's been a long time
|
It's been forever since I've posted. And my "secret admirer" has been nagging me. So here we are.
I'm getting ready to begin my last week of classes...ever. Such a weird feeling. It hasn't completely set in yet, although it started to sink in when I turned in my 491 paper last week.
Speaking of 491 papers, I'm really scared to get it back. I really liked my paper. It's just a matter of whether he likes it or not. And we all know how arbitrary he is when he grades papers.
I don't know how I'll survive this week. I have assignments/scenes/tests in just about every class, every day. It's going to be rough.
The search for a job after July is not going well. At all. I'm at a loss. On the bright side, I have a job until July. That's a good thing. However, I do need to know what's happening after that. The internship stuff is not likely to work out. And who knows what to do after that. This has been my one complaint about the Theatre Department. There is no assistance in what to do after we graduate. And let's face it...that's REALLY important to know. So here I am. With no job after July. Feeling really bummed. I don't feel sorry for myself. I have worked hard, consistently throughout college. And I know that somehow, someway, something will work out. But my self-esteem is really dropping, no matter how many times I tell myself these things. And I'm lucky to have Andres. He is honest with me, and manages to find a blend between what I need to hear, and what will make me feel better. I'm very lucky, and incredibly thankful. He's been very supportive.
I don't remember having a semester this work heavy. I'm not even doing a show, and I feel so bogged down with work.
I saw Curse of the Starving Class and enjoyed it. The students actors did a really great job. It seems as though this Woolly collaboration thing is going to turn out really well. I'm glad.
Everyone should come see the Musical Theatre Showcase, Monday at 4:00 in the Lab. It should be really good.
Driving home tomorrow for Mother's Day for a cook out. It'll be nice to see the family. As always, I'm sure the wedding will be a big topic of conversation.
Speaking of which...you know that date we set? Right. Well it might be changing. So now we're back to having nothing set. Might want to figure that out soon. Planning a wedding sucks. I want the ceremony and reception, but I don't really want to deal with the steps it takes to getting there.
Stress is making me a crazy person. I consider myself to be a person who handles stress really well. But not right now. I've been worrying myself sick about everything, and have been over sensitive and emotional. It's ANNOYING.
I'm scared about school ending. However, I'm absolutely ecstatic about not having to do homework anymore.
And on that note...I'm going to go do homework.
